Way Back Weekend- Sweet Valley

Most memorable series of my tween years. The Sweet Valley twins, better known as Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield. Written by Francine Pascal, the twins were the epiphany of teenagers everywhere. Perfect, drama filled, and unrealistic! Jessica, the boy crazy risk taker, and Elizabeth, the down to earth, academic one. The series began in 1983 and included many spin off series such as; Sweet Valley Kids, Sweet Valley Twins, Sweet Valley Jr. High, Sweet Valley High: Senior Year, Sweet Valley University, and most recently Sweet Valley Confidential. We basically get to live through the life of these gorgeous blondes, minus their births (that would have made a trippy book!). We even got to see the twins in a T.V series which ran for 88 episodes. I haven’t seen all of the series, but I remember it being quite good! So here we are years later, and a new series has recently come out entitled Sweet Valley: The Sweet Life. I was excited when I read about this series, until I read some of the reviews. They include inconsistencies with the characters with the other series, horrible grammatical errors, and silly plots. While the twins are thirty-something’s in the new series, I have to give it a try! I envied these twins my entire life. I was there throughout their entire life. When Lila and Bruce finally got together, after years of hating each other, I cried! When the earthquake hit and killed Olivia, I was undoubtedly torn apart. If anything bad has ever happened to a person, it has happened to either Elizabeth or Jessica. I can’t remember everything that happened in the books ( I read almost all of them decades ago) but looking back it reminds me of One tree Hill. Everyone backstabbing and hooking up, it is real life! Let’s take a trip down memory lane shall we?

In the Sweet Valley High Series, here is what I wish would have happened to my three favorite gals.

(caution may contain spoilers from the Sweet Life Series)

Elizabeth Wakefield: Considering the fact that Todd and Liz were together since middle school, I am a sucker for this type of love. They were broken up in Senior Year, even in the SUV series they kept breaking up and Liz kept going for the bad boys. In my perfect ending, they end up together. It’s such a shame that in the Sweet Life he ends up with Jessica. Really? Then Liz is in love with Bruce? Not cool.

Jessica Wakefield- Out of all the men she has dated, and there were a lot, Jessica and Jeremy Aames were destined for each other. Jeremy was in the Senior Year series, and not in SVU. He was so down to earth, but under the same social pressure that Jessica had, they just fit… then I remembered Jessica in SVU, and then I remembered Nick Fox, the undercover detective Jessica dated. He was murdered, but she loved him so much. They were perfect together. Poor Jessica, so many of her boyfriends were killed. Instead she ends up with boring Todd?

Lila Folwer: Snobby Lila, she really should have ended up alone, but when she and Bruce Patman hooked up in SVU…it was destiny. I don’t remember them working out, but they should have ended up together. In the end Lila ended up with Ken Mathews. Ken was an alright guy I guess. Indifferent.
